In our 5-day Beginning Weaving Class, students learn everything they need to know in order to design and weave simple, but beautiful weavings with a plain colored warp on a treadle loom. The course includes instruction in loom setup (winding a warp and tying it on), planning and designing the colors and yarns of your weaving, weaving techniques on a Rio Grande Style floor loom, and mending and finishing your piece.

In addition to instructor-led, hands-on learning, each student will also receive a classroom workbook with historical background, weaving terminology, and practical instructions to be used as a guide during the class and beyond.

  • All weaving equipment and instruction are included in the class price. Warp threads will be supplied on the looms. However, weft materials – the colored yarns you will be using to create your design – will need to be purchased on-site, with two different weights to choose from: rug (heavier weight) or blanket (lighter weight).

  • Students are welcome to browse the Tierra Wools yarn selection once they arrive on site. If you’d like to get an idea of the color selection beforehand, you can also visit the website of Shepherd’s Lamb, our local partner and yarn supplier. Click here to visit Shepherd’s Lamb.

In our 2-day* Hand Spinning Class, we discuss how to pick a good fleece, what characteristics make a good spinning fiber, and how to wash and prep the fiber for spinning. Hands-on activities include combing, prepping and spinning of the fiber.

At Tierra Wools, spinners learn on the Rio Grande Spinning Wheel, designed by Rachel Brown and her husband. This wheel is chosen mostly for the variety of weights of yarn you can spin on it, as well as the amount of yarn it is able to spin in a small amount of time, making it the most useful spinning wheel for local weavers or fiber artisans who use a variety of weights in large amounts.

*Our regularly scheduled Hand Spinning Classes are on Tuesday and Wednesday every week. If you would like to schedule a class during different weekdays or during the weekend, please contact us and we will work with you to schedule a class that accommodates your schedule.

Hand Spinning Class

Hand Spinning Class
240.00
