Monastery of Our Lady of the Desert
Woven Goods from Guatemala
I am a Benedictine nun and I live in the Monastery of Our Lady of the Desert in Gobernador, New Mexico. I was born and raised in Guatemala where I learned the artistry of weaving. life in a Benedictine monastery is a life of prayer and work (ora et labora). Each sister contributes to the expenses of running the monastery by selling goods that she can make according to her talents. As I know how to weave, I dedicate some time each day to weaving bookmarks made with the style and colors characteristically used in Guatemala. the people of the town where I was born, San Juan Comalapa, send me all kinds of woven goods that are also sold in the Tierra Wools store. A percentage of the sales go to help the children there attend school!
