C- Bettye Sullivan
Bettye is originally from Texas, but has been in Taos for 33 years, since
1990. Her husband, also a weaver, live in an adobe house on top of
a mesa just west of Taos. Their hiking days are
over, but they have roamed all over the Sangre de Christos in the past,
gaining inspiration for their weavings.
For me, it is all about color. I love dying my own yarns outside over a
wood fire, then drying them under the big blue sky and beautiful light
of Northern New Mexico. Then I pile a few skeins on the floor of my
studio. I add maybe another color, pull out one, etc which may take a
few days until I am satisfied with the combination. My designs are a
little contemporary but I use a traditional Spanish walking loom and
traditional techniques that I learned from Rachel Brown whom I worked
for 13 years at Weaving Southwest. All my weaving and dying training
came from her.
