Sam Olivas

Sam Olivas was born on March, 19th 1941 in Coyote, NM. He has been married for 47 years and has four daughters. He also served in the US Army. Sam currently resides in Santa Fe, NM. He has worked with wood and wood products for the majority of his life. Sam has custom make everything from kitchen tables, bed frames, entertainment centers, coffins, hand carved crosses, to walking sticks and much much more. It wasn’t until 15 years ago that he sparked an interest in turning bowls. He has found that turning bowls is a rewarding and fascinating hobby. Turning bowls from scratch is very challenging and can be a frustrating task as different types of wood are very unpredictable. Sam is completely self-taught and learned the hard way about the type of wood to use, the type of tools to use, and how easily wood can crack. Along the way Sam has invented his own carving tools, gigs and methods of curing his bowls. Sam harvests his own wood and often travels across the state to find just the right cut of wood for his bowls. Sam takes pride on bringing out the beauty of each piece of wood. Sam is always looking to come up with something unique.
